STEM Integration into Community Schools

The COVID crisis is as much an education crisis as a healthcare crisis in New Mexico. Children have fallen behind, and they need extraordinary help to progress. The State is benefitting from two windfalls this year: (1) $1.75 billion in Covid-related funds and (2) An anticipated surplus of $1.4 billion due to strong oil and gas royalties. Money is currently available to help the State help students out of the crisis.

The Coalition for Public Education is seeking $30 million to help students in Santa Fe and Socorro. CPE is working with the Santa Fe Public School system and New Mexico Tech to pursue three major strategic goals over the next five years;

  • Programs to boost K-4 math and reading

  • STEM to career and college

  • Coordination with community resources to help at-risk students

This program will be piloted in Santa Fe and Socorro. If successful, it can be duplicated in other State school systems.

The CPE has a 12-year track record of providing math and reading programs, tutors and community support to Santa Fe students.

  • New Mexico Tech is the premier STEM college in the State, with a wish to improve statewide STEM achievements

  • The Santa Fe Public School system is under new leadership and looks forward to the additional support

Many educational initiatives are too small and too short-term to make a difference. Some are with for-profit companies or groups with little experience. If funded, this initiative will make an impact through:

  • Long-term focus

  • University, SFPS, Socorro PS, and CPE working together

  • CPE’s proven track record in Santa Fe

  • NM Tech is fiduciary and partner in the effort

  • Pilot in Santa Fe and Socorro, then take Statewide
